The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued novelty collector pieces under its authority since the late 1990s, largely as a revenue mechanism targeting the international thematic coin market rather than domestic circulation. This Schumacher piece appeared in 2007, one year after his first retirement from Formula One following the 2006 season at Ferrari — a retirement he would later reverse before withdrawing permanently in 2012.
