| Additional information |
Mali issued this coin in 1961, the year after independence from French Sudan — a transition that came through France's rapid decolonization of West Africa rather than armed struggle. The franc malien replaced the CFA franc as the country attempted monetary independence from the franc zone, a separation that proved economically unsustainable. By 1984, Mali rejoined the West African CFA franc system entirely, making the franc malien a short-lived experiment that lasted barely two decades in any meaningful circulation.
