Additional information

Struck to commemorate the 1853 marriage of Philippe, Duke of Brabant — heir to the Belgian throne — to Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria, this medallic issue was produced under Léopold I, who had himself come to power through diplomatic maneuvering rather than hereditary right. Belgium had existed as an independent kingdom for barely two decades at the time. The dynastic alliance with the Habsburgs carried obvious political weight for a young monarchy still establishing its European credentials.

Two die varieties are catalogued, distinguished by subtle differences in the reverse execution — KM#M2.1 and KM#M2.2 — a split that drives collector interest disproportionate to the coin's age.
