The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a substantial volume of collector-targeted wildlife coinage since the late 1990s, much of it produced by European mints with no meaningful connection to domestic circulation. This piece falls squarely into that category — a face value of 5 francs was functionally meaningless in a country where the franc had been redenominated in 1998 after hyperinflation rendered the old zaïre worthless at a conversion rate of 100,000 to one.
