| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical personification of the French Republic, rendered in high relief with an elaborate coiled and braided hairstyle adorned with a decorative rosette. The engraver's signature G.B.L. BAZOR appears in small characters below the truncation. The date 19 56 is divided on either side of the bust in the upper field, with two stylized ears of grain flanking the portrait. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE runs along the lower periphery. |

| Reverse description | Central motif depicting a West African gazelle (antelope) shown facing forward in full figure, its long curved horns rising prominently into the upper field. The animal is flanked symmetrically by stylised tropical vegetation including maize cobs and flowering plants, all rendered in fine relief. The denomination 5 F. appears in the upper field to either side of the horns, with the word ESSAI inscribed between them indicating the trial strike status. The circular legend AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE FRANCAISE runs along the lower periphery, bordered by a decorative floral motif at the top of the coin. |
