The Escalade commemorates Geneva's repulsion of a Savoyard surprise attack on the night of 11–12 December 1602 — an event the city still celebrates annually with costumed processions and the ritual smashing of a chocolate cauldron. Swissmint struck this bimetallic trial piece in 2002 to test production parameters before committing to the commemorative issue. Trial strikings of this type were produced in extremely limited numbers, primarily for internal evaluation and archive purposes, and were never intended for circulation or public sale.
