| Additional information |
This piece belongs to a wave of foreign commemorative issues produced for the Democratic Republic of Congo in the late 1990s — a period when the newly renamed state, having shed the Mobutu-era name Zaire in 1997, was simultaneously fighting a renewal of civil conflict and licensing its mint authority to overseas producers hungry for collector revenue. The Danish royal family connection is purely commercial; neither Mary nor Isabella held any relationship to Congolese affairs.
