Issued to mark the turn of the millennium, this coin belongs to a Monnaie de Paris commemorative series revisiting medieval French monetary history. The denier was the workhorse coin of the Carolingian monetary reform of 793–794, when Charlemagne standardized the pound, shilling, and penny system — a framework that persisted across Western Europe for over a thousand years. The libra, solidus, and denarius hierarchy he imposed survived in British £sd coinage until decimalization in 1971.
