Additional information

Issued to mark the Fasnacht, Basel's three-day carnival that famously begins at 4 a.m. on the Monday after Ash Wednesday — a deliberate defiance of the city's Protestant Reformation heritage, which banned the festival in 1529. Basel quietly revived it anyway, and the tradition has continued largely uninterrupted since the 17th century. Switzerland submitted the Basel Fasnacht to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, where it was inscribed in 2017.

The bimetallic format was relatively new to Swiss commemorative coinage at this point, having been introduced for the circulation 5-franc piece only in 1985.
