Additional information

This piece was issued by the Banque Centrale du Congo — not the National Bank of Belgium — placing it firmly within the tradition of central African states adopting European royal imagery for commemorative coinage well after independence. The Democratic Republic of Congo resumed issuing collector-oriented coins in the 1990s through licensing arrangements that had little to do with monetary circulation; these pieces were produced largely for the international numismatic market rather than domestic use.

Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, widow of Albert I, died in 1965 — over three decades before this coin's issue date.
