Burundi's wildlife coin series, issued through the early 2010s, was produced for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — the country had no realistic use for aluminium 5-franc pieces, a denomination effectively worthless in everyday commerce. The Shoebill (*Balaeniceps rex*) depicted here is native to the Sudd swamps of South Sudan and the Albertine Rift region, placing it geographically close to but largely outside Burundian territory.
