| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of Marianne, the female personification of the French Republic, wearing a winged Phrygian cap adorned with the French tricolor cockade. Cargo ships are depicted in the background field behind the portrait. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE curves along the upper periphery, with the engraver's initials L.BAZOR and the date 1953 appearing in the lower field. | Additional information |
Madagascar remained under French administration until 1960, and this issue was struck by the Paris Mint for the Territoire de Madagascar et Dépendances under the Institut d'Émission Malgache. The 1953 date places it among the last colonial aluminum issues before the territory's path toward the Malagasy Republic — French monetary administration would persist even beyond formal independence, with the CFA franc framework shaping regional currency policy for years afterward.
