Banque de la Guyane was a private colonial bank chartered to issue currency for French Guiana, and by 1942 it was operating under the Free French administration after the colony rallied to de Gaulle in 1940. Cut off from metropolitan France and its usual printers, the bank turned to E. A. Wright in Philadelphia — a commercial engraving house better known for corporate bonds and diplomas than sovereign currency.
Wright produced several emergency issues for Free French territories during this period. The Philadelphia connection reflects wartime logistics, not prestige.
