The dual denomination — francs alongside ariary — reflects Madagascar's drawn-out monetary transition following independence in 1960. The ariary, a pre-colonial Malagasy unit historically equivalent to five francs, was being reintroduced gradually before the franc was fully abandoned. The Banque de Madagascar et des Comores itself was dissolved in 1975 when the Comoros issued their own currency after independence, yet Madagascar continued striking coins under the old institutional name well into the 1980s.
