The forint was introduced on 1 August 1946 as Hungary's post-WWII monetary stabilization measure — arguably the most successful cold-start currency reform in modern history, implemented to end the worst hyperinflation ever recorded, during which the Hungarian pengő lost value so rapidly that the largest banknote ever printed, the 100 quintillion pengő, was worth less than the paper it was printed on by the time it circulated. This commemorative 5 forint marks that 75th anniversary. The "R" designation indicates a specimen or special collector strike from the Budapest Mint.
