Prison scrip in the People's Republic of China occupied a peculiar administrative niche — issued internally to allow inmates to purchase approved goods within the facility, effectively substituting for state currency in a controlled micro-economy. The Guizhou Province Second Prison series of 1963 is among the earlier documented examples of this practice, issued well before such internal currencies became more systematized in later decades.
1963 places this squarely in the post-Great Leap famine period, when even civilian currency was subject to severe rationing. That a provincial prison was issuing its own denominated scrip at this moment speaks to the degree of institutional self-containment Chinese penal facilities maintained.
