This piece is a pattern strike, never adopted for circulation — Szechuan's provincial mint experimented with small silver denominations in 1897 but the fen-denominated series was abandoned before production coinage was authorized. L&M 344 is among the scarcer of the Szechuan pattern attributions, with surviving examples numbering in the low dozens at best.
