| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in dark olive-green on a light green guilloche underprint. At left, the denomination 伍分 appears within an elaborate rosette vignette of fine lathe-work. To the right, an intaglio vignette of a ocean-going cargo steamer is rendered in fine line engraving against a stippled sea and sky background. The bank title 中國人民銀行 is set in a decorative panel along the top border, with the date 一九五三年 in a corresponding panel at the foot. |

The third series of renminbi was planned in the early 1950s but the small-denomination paper fen notes — including this 5 Fen — were not actually released into circulation until 1955, when the People's Bank of China redenominated the currency at 10,000 old yuan to one new yuan. The fen denominations were produced to fill the fractional gap that silver and base-metal coinage could not yet reliably cover at scale across a country in the middle of rapid economic reorganization.
These fen notes remained legal tender far longer than most PRC paper issues — officially until 2007 — which means genuinely uncirculated examples are uncommon despite the large print runs.
