Obverse description The obverse features the Portuguese coat of arms — a central shield bearing five blue escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with white bezants, enclosed within a red bordure bearing golden castles — rendered in high relief at the center of the field. The arms are encircled by a stylized geometric ring motif. The circular legend REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5 EURO appears in the lower field, flanked by centered dots. The date 2007 is inscribed above the arms, with the mint mark INCM to the lower left and the engraver's name RICARDO VELOZA to the lower right.

Additional information

The Laurissilva forests of Madeira were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, recognized as one of the largest surviving remnants of the laurel forest that once blanketed much of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin during the Tertiary period — roughly 15 to 40 million years ago. The forest's persistence on Madeira owes entirely to the island's isolation and stable Atlantic climate, which protected it while the same ecosystem was eliminated elsewhere by glaciation.

Portugal's World Heritage coin series, of which this is part, ran through the mid-2000s as proof issues in .925 silver alongside a bimetallic circulation version. The KM#782a designation distinguishes this proof striking from its base companion.
