Issued as part of Italy's ongoing "Europa" commemorative program, this 5 euro piece was one of the earliest silver issues in that series, appearing just two years after Italy's adoption of euro coinage. The "Work in Europe" theme tied directly to Italy's constitutional identity — Article 1 of the Italian Constitution defines the republic as "founded on work," a deliberate postwar repudiation of fascist corporatism.
