| Additional information |
The Woudagemaal in Lemmer, Friesland, is the largest operating steam-pumping station in the world and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 alongside the broader Dutch mill network. Built in 1920, it was engineered to drain the Frisian lowlands using steam power at a scale no previous installation had achieved. It still runs — occasionally under steam — for demonstration purposes.
This issue is part of the Netherlands' ongoing "Dutch Windmill" five-euro circulation commemorative program, which targets domestic collectors rather than general circulation.
