Reverse description The reverse presents a detailed cartographic depiction of the Wadden Sea region, with the names of Wadden islands and localities inscribed along the coastline in a radiating arrangement around the field. Two seabirds in flight are engraved in the upper portion of the field, one rendered with fine line work and the other in color against a mirror-polished background. A starfish motif is shown in the lower right quadrant. The bold legend 'DE WADDENZEE' dominates the upper field, with 'NEDERLANDS WERELDERFGOED 2016' below it, and the denomination '5 EURO' appears prominently in the lower left, all in colored and relief lettering.

Additional information

Issued as part of the Netherlands' ongoing nature-themed collector series, this piece commemorates the Wadden Sea, which gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2009 — a designation shared with the adjoining German and Danish tidal zones. The applied color layer, added post-strike, reflects the Royal Dutch Mint's push into the colored coin market that accelerated sharply through the 2010s as collector demand for novelty issues outpaced traditional proof production.

Face value of five euros places it above legal tender thresholds for most vending and transit systems, meaning virtually none entered circulation.
