The Wadden Sea coin was issued as part of the Netherlands' ongoing "Nederland en het water" (Netherlands and Water) series, which the Royal Dutch Mint used to highlight UNESCO World Heritage sites with direct Dutch relevance. The Wadden Sea received UNESCO designation in 2009, with the Dutch and German sections listed first; Denmark's portion was added in 2014 — which is precisely why "Denmark" appears in this coin's title, marking that expanded designation rather than indicating Danish issuance.
The selective coloring applied to this issue was done at the mint facility in Houten, a technique the Royal Dutch Mint refined considerably after earlier colored issues drew criticism for uneven application.
