The Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam, built between 1925 and 1931 for the Van Nelle company's coffee, tea, and tobacco processing operations, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 — the year before this coin was issued. Designed by architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt, it became one of the defining examples of Dutch functionalist architecture and drew Le Corbusier's admiring attention during its construction.
The 2015 Dutch commemorative five-euro program regularly employed silver-plated copper for circulation-tier issues, keeping face-value redemption practical while the accompanying silver proofs satisfied collector demand.
