The Peace Palace in The Hague opened in August 1913, funded almost entirely by Andrew Carnegie's $1.5 million donation, and this coin marks the centenary of that opening. Carnegie's gift came with conditions — the Netherlands had to provide the land and the building itself, which the Dutch government secured through a combination of state funds and a national subscription campaign that drew contributions from ordinary citizens.
The silver-plated copper composition places this firmly in the Dutch collector circulation series rather than the premium silver program — a cost-conscious issue for a broadly distributed commemorative.
