Issued in 2016 to mark the 500th anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch's death, this coin was part of the Netherlands' broader national commemoration organized around 's-Hertogenbosch, the city where Bosch spent virtually his entire life. The anniversary program, branded "Jheronimus Bosch 500," drew international attention to a painter whose work had spent centuries being variously attributed, misread, and copied by imitators — including several pieces still disputed today.
Face value of five euros placed it in the Dutch collector coin tier: legal tender but priced above circulation, intended for the gift and numismatic market rather than a cash drawer.
