Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch's death, this coin was part of a broader Dutch cultural commemoration that included exhibitions drawing record attendance at the Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch — the city where Bosch spent virtually his entire life and from which he took his name. The Dutch government's choice to anchor the anniversary in 2016 required some acceptance of uncertainty: the exact year of his birth remains unknown, placing it only approximately around 1450.
The 5-euro face value restricted legal tender use to the Netherlands, as Dutch commemorative coins at this denomination are not obligatory tender elsewhere in the eurozone.
