The Dutch Waterlines series draws on the historic inundation defense network — a system of controlled flooding used to halt invading armies — that protected Dutch cities from the late 16th century onward. The most celebrated activation came in 1672, the Rampjaar or Disaster Year, when French forces under Louis XIV were stopped in part by the deliberate flooding of the polders south of Amsterdam.
The silver-plated copper composition places this squarely in the Netherlands' collector-circulation hybrid category, struck for face value but with an obvious premium finish targeting the general public gift market rather than serious numismatic collectors.
