The nine coats of arms of the Austrian provinces surround the `5` of the face value `5 EURO`. Around the coats of arms is the inscription `REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH` (Republic of Austria). The design is directly inspired by the old Austrian 50 schilling coins.

The design was inspired by a historic photo of the opening session of Parliament after the 1907 election. It shows the government bench at the front and two officials behind desks above. Opposite are some of the newly elected members of the House. The two oval portraits commemorate Emperor Franz Joseph and Max von Beck Wladimir, who were mainly responsible for the implementation of the reform. Circular caption: `100 years voting rights reform`, `1907 2007`, `Emperor Franz Joseph I / Baron Von Beck`.
