| Obverse description | Central field features the Portuguese coat of arms — the escutcheon with five bezants arranged in a cross and a red border charged with seven castles — set within a circular design inspired by the geometric abstraction of Portuguese Modernism. Radiating from the central shield are four bold angular sections evoking a stylized star or compass rose, rendered in a high-relief matte finish against a mirror-polished field. The legend PORTUGAL arcs along the upper left periphery in large capital letters, integrated into the geometric composition. The date 2016 appears to the lower right of the shield, with the engraver's signature R. VASQUEZ and the mint mark INCM positioned near the lower rim. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents a stylized portrait of the Portuguese Modernist artist and writer José de Almada Negreiros, rendered in a Cubist-influenced style with fragmented facial features overlaid with densely typeset text drawn from his literary works, filling the entire field in a striking graphic design. The denomination 5€ appears in the lower centre, flanked by the name ALMADA NEGREIROS along the lower rim. The legend O MODERNISMO PORTUGUES curves along the left and upper periphery in bold capital letters, completing the thematic framing of the composition. |
