Portugal's "Art of Porcelain" series commemorates the country's historical role as a conduit for Chinese porcelain into Europe — Portuguese traders dominated that trade through Macau from the mid-sixteenth century, and Lisbon became the primary entry point for blue-and-white ware long before the Dutch or British established competing routes. The gold variant of this issue sits at the premium end of a multi-metal release that also included silver and a hybrid porcelain-inlay piece, the latter being the centerpiece of the series technically.
KM#939b distinguishes the gold strike from its siblings in the emission sequence. Mintage figures for Portuguese gold collector issues of this type are typically kept very low — often under 500 pieces worldwide.
