| Obverse description | The Maltese coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing the traditional George Cross emblem, surmounted by a mural crown and flanked symmetrically by two olive branches tied at the base with a ribbon. The legend MALTA appears along the left field and the date 2013 along the right field. The denomination 5 EURO is inscribed along the lower border within the outer ring. The full Maltese legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA encircles the design on the reverse side of the lettering arrangement. |

Malta's claim here rests on a specific technicality: at 0.5 grams and 11 mm, this was certified by Guinness World Records as the smallest gold legal tender coin issued by a central bank. The picciolo itself was a medieval Maltese copper fractional coin, historically among the lowest-denomination currency in circulation on the island — an irony the Central Bank leaned into by attaching the name to a collector piece priced well above face value.
