Additional information

Segovia's mint was one of the most technically advanced in Europe when Felipe II ordered construction of its water-powered screw press facility in the 1580s — the first of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. The Real Ingenio de Segovia, as it was known, produced milled coinage of a consistency that hand-struck methods simply could not match, and it remained operationally significant for over two centuries.

This issue commemorates that history directly, tying the modern Royal Mint's lineage back to the Segovian facility that effectively set the technical standard for Spanish colonial coinage.
