Reverse description A right-facing truncated bust portrait of Kyösti Kallio, the fourth President of Finland (1937–1940), occupies the nickel-brass centre of the bimetallic flan, rendered in a restrained, naturalistic relief. The subject is depicted in civilian dress with a suit collar visible at the lower truncation. The legend arching around the upper portion of the aluminium-bronze outer ring reads KYÖSTI KALLIO, with his birth and death years 1873–1940 continuing along the right arc, all in incuse Latin lettering.

Additional information

Kallio is the only Finnish president to have died in office — collapsing at Helsinki Railway Station in December 1940, minutes after boarding a train, having just delivered a farewell radio address. He had begged Risto Ryti to relieve him of the presidency, his health broken by the strain of the Winter War and the humiliation of signing the Moscow Peace Treaty, which he reportedly cursed aloud at the ceremony.
