Reverse description The reverse presents a frontal effigy of Pope John XXI (Pedro Hispano), shown in full pontifical vestments including a papal tiara and cope, holding a crosier in his left hand and a book — symbolic of his scholarly medical works — in his right. To the left of the figure, the Portuguese royal shield and the engravers' signatures ISABEL C. and F. BRANCO are inscribed, along with the dual dates 1205 and 2005 flanking the figure. The surrounding legend reads JOÃO·XXI·PAPA·VIII·CENTENARIO·DE·PEDRO·HISPANO·MÉDICO, referencing the 800th anniversary of Pedro Hispano's birth. The design is executed in a bold, sculptural style characteristic of commemorative medallic art.
