Part of Italy's ongoing "Eccellenze Italiane" collector series, this issue celebrates two products that carry legally protected designations of origin — Neapolitan pizza earned UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2017, and mozzarella di bufala campana has held DOP status since 1996. The series was explicitly designed to compete in the growing European market for themed circulation-format collector coins, following the commercial success of similar food-themed issues from other eurozone mints.
These were sold at a premium above face value and were never intended for circulation.
