Italy's "People in Europe" series launched in 2003 as part of a broader effort by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato to produce collector-focused silver issues following euro adoption. The transition to the single currency had effectively ended Italy's tradition of annually redesigned circulation coinage, pushing commemorative and thematic series into the space that lira specials once occupied.
