Obverse description The obverse features the Portuguese royal coat of arms — a quartered escutcheon displaying the traditional quinas and castles, surmounted by a royal crown — centrally positioned in the field. The engraver's signature R. VASQUEZ and the mint mark INCM appear in the upper field above the shield. The circular legend REPÚBLICA·PORTUGUESA flanks the left and lower portions of the design, while the denomination 5€ appears to the right and the date 2013 to the upper left, all rendered in raised relief against a plain field.

Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed bare-headed portrait of Queen Maria II of Portugal, shown in left-facing bust, her hair elegantly styled in a braided chignon with loose strands framing the nape of the neck — a design evocative of the so-called 'degolada' (decollated) coinage type of her reign. The truncation of the bust is bare, lending the portrait a classical Neoclassical character. The circumferential legend MARIA·II·D·G·PORTUG·ET·ALGARB·REGINA runs along the upper and lateral periphery, while the historic date 1833· appears in the lower exergual area, referencing the original coinage type being commemorated.
