| Obverse description | The Irish national symbol, a finely detailed Brian Boru harp, is depicted centrally in the field, rendered with intricate string and forepillar detail. The harp is encircled by a wreath of olive branches tied at the base, framing the central device. The Irish-language country name ÉIRE appears to the left of the harp, and the date 2008 to the right, both inscribed vertically. A small circular mint privy mark appears in the lower right field. The overall composition reflects a restrained, classically inspired design typical of Irish commemorative coinage. |

The International Polar Year 2007–2008 was a coordinated global research initiative involving over 60 nations and roughly 50,000 scientists — the largest such program since 1957–58. Ireland's participation was modest, but the Central Bank used the occasion to issue this coin under enabling legislation that had gradually expanded the country's commemorative program through the 2000s. The IPY itself produced significant findings on Arctic ice-sheet dynamics that fed directly into the 2007 IPCC assessment.
