Obverse description Within the brass centre, a stylized depiction of a group of rowers in a traditional Finnish longboat, rendered in a bold, modernist relief style evoking ancient rock carvings. The composition extends dynamically across both the centre and the copper-nickel ring, with abstracted figures of rowers and the prow of the vessel reaching into the outer field. The legend SUOMI at the top and FINLAND at the bottom is incused along the outer ring, separated by a raised dot, with the denomination 5 € inscribed to the lower right.

Additional information

Finland's 2007 independence commemorative marks the 90th anniversary of the declaration of December 6th, 1917 — signed by the Finnish Senate just weeks after the Bolshevik revolution created the political opening Finns had been waiting for. Lenin's Council of People's Commissars recognized Finnish independence on January 4th, 1918, making Russia the first state to do so, a historical irony rarely noted in Finnish commemorative literature.

The bimetallic format was by this point well-established in Finnish collector issues, the Mint of Finland having adopted it for circulating commemoratives following European convention after euro adoption in 2002.
