Obverse description The obverse features a reclining male figure, partly veiled, representing the Tevere (Tiber River), modelled after the celebrated ancient sculpture now displayed in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome. The figure holds a large cornucopia, and beneath his torso appear the she-wolf of Rome suckling the infants Romulus and Remus. The altar before the figure bears the official logo of the 13th FINA World Championships. The legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA arcs along the upper field, with the Roma mint mark and the stylised event inscription ROMA09 positioned at right.
