Cyprus joined the European Union on 1 May 2004, one of ten states admitted in the bloc's largest single enlargement. The accession came while the island remained politically divided — the Turkish-controlled north had rejected a UN reunification plan just days before membership took effect, meaning Cyprus entered the EU with its own government exercising no authority over roughly a third of its territory. That unresolved partition continues to shape every formal expression of Cypriot statehood, including its commemorative coinage program.
