Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth, this coin was part of a broader Dutch cultural commemoration that included exhibitions, restorations, and international loans from the Rijksmuseum. The Netherlands had a particular stake in the year — the Rijksmuseum's own Rembrandt holdings had been under a decade-long restoration program, and 2006 was its public moment of reassertion.
Struck in .925 silver under Beatrix's reign, these were sold at a premium over face value and saw minimal circulation. KM#266 is a single-year type with no known die varieties of note.
