| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of San Marino occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with three plumed towers atop three mountain peaks, surmounted by a royal crown, with the motto LIBERTAS inscribed on a scroll at the base. A laurel branch flanks the shield to the left and an oak branch to the right, both rendered in fine relief. The circular legend REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO arcs along the upper periphery, while the engraver's signature E.L. FRAPICCINI appears incuse along the lower rim. |

Bartolomeo Borghesi (1781–1860) spent the last four decades of his life in voluntary exile in San Marino, having relocated from his native Savignano to escape Napoleonic disruption. He became the foremost Latin epigrapher of the 19th century, and his correspondence with Theodor Mommsen shaped the foundations of modern Roman numismatic scholarship. San Marino sheltered him; he repaid it with an international reputation it could not otherwise have claimed.
His ten-volume Oeuvres complètes was published posthumously by the French government.
