Part of Austria's "Magic of the Arctic" series, this copper circulation-commemorative was issued as an accessible entry point into Austrian collector coinage — priced near face value and widely distributed through banks. Austria had been expanding its themed commemorative program aggressively in the early 2010s, and the Arctic Adventure piece was among the higher-mintage issues in that run, intended for general public acquisition rather than specialist collectors.
Copper was the deliberate choice here, distinguishing it from the silver and niobium issues the Mint was producing simultaneously at significantly higher price points.
