Alcalá de Henares was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, recognized specifically as the first purpose-built Renaissance university city in the world. This coin was issued as part of Spain's long-running UNESCO World Heritage series, which the Real Casa de la Moneda has used since the 1990s to work through Spain's considerable roster of designated sites. Alcalá's inclusion in the series was notably delayed relative to the designation itself.
The city is birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, though the exact house remains disputed by historians.
