| Reverse description | The reverse is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs, the iconic Belgian cartoon characters created by Peyo. The anniversary dates '1958 - 2008' are inscribed in the upper field. The legend 'LES SCHTROUMPFS' arcs along the upper rim in bold stylized lettering, while 'DE SMURFEN' appears along the lower rim. | Additional information |
Belgium issued this piece in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs, the blue characters created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo — born Pierre Culliford — whose first appearance was in the pages of the comics magazine Spirou in October 1958. The coin was struck as a legal tender collector issue rather than a circulation piece, part of a broader national celebration of one of Belgium's most commercially successful cultural exports.
Two varieties exist, distinguished by the Smurf depicted, both carrying the LA#BEM-10.1 reference family.
