Issued as part of Italy's ongoing "Eccellenze del Sapere" series celebrating Italian intellectual and industrial achievement, this piece honors Adriano Olivetti, the industrialist and social philosopher who transformed his family's typewriter company into one of the most design-forward manufacturing firms of the twentieth century. Olivetti's Ivrea headquarters — designed by a roster of architects including Ignazio Gardella and Luigi Figini — was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, lending renewed institutional weight to his legacy at precisely the moment this coin was being planned.
The "white" designation distinguishes this from a companion colored version issued simultaneously.
