Additional information

Madeira never formally issued its own euro coinage — this is a pattern strike produced ahead of the eurozone transition discussions, part of a broader wave of speculative and semi-official pieces made for various Portuguese autonomous regions in the early 2000s. These were never sanctioned for circulation and exist primarily as collector curiosities, their issuing authority ambiguous enough that they occupy an uncomfortable middle ground between official patterns and fantasy pieces.
