Obverse description Left-facing effigy of King Albert II, depicting the modified second portrait introduced to comply with European Central Bank recommendations, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle. Between two of the stars appear the country designation 'BE' for Belgium and the royal monogram consisting of the letter 'A' surmounted by a crown with the numeral 'II' beneath. The mint year 2008 is inscribed in the field. The portrait was engraved by Jan Alfons Keustermans.
